Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, known as CEREC, uses unique CAD/CAM technology to produce same-day crowns in one dental visit.

While this treatment is considered new, dentists have relied on the CEREC software for over thirty years to create digital impressions and virtual models. The CEREC dental technology includes a camera, computer and milling machine to fabricate the dental crown in the office (this eliminates the need to send your impressions to an outside lab, which can take days to complete). Instead of performing standard impressions, we will take a 2D photo of your smile to upload onto our CEREC software, which will then transform the picture into a 3D image. The 3D image will allow our patients to preview their new smile before creating the dental crown.

CEREC technology promises a same-day dental crown that looks just like a natural tooth, mimicking shading, translucency and contouring. Once the crown is designed, the CAM technology fabricates the dental crown while the patient waits. The whole process only takes about an hour. Once the crown is finished, we will bond it to your old tooth to restore your damaged smile.

The Same-Day Crown Process

Dr. Winegar will first perform a complete oral exam to determine if a damaged tooth can receive a CEREC crown.  Then he will use digital X-rays and an inventive combination of CT and light scanning techniques to image the tooth and make a digital impression. This quick process eliminates gooey impressions and long wait times for lab work to be completed. He also shapes the remaining tooth enamel to receive the crown.

The digital impression gives the CEREC milling machine all the information needed to manufacture a beautiful all-ceramic dental crown. The manufacturing process takes 15 minutes or so. Dr. Winegar then bonds the crown securely in place, and it replicates the size, shape and color of the original tooth, creating a perfect bite and protecting remaining enamel from further damage.
